April 2009

Dear Friends of the Newport Library,

With the arrival of another spring, we ask again for your new or continued support of our local library. The demands on our collection and services continue to grow at a fast pace. Record numbers of area residents are turning to NPL to meet a variety of needs and desires. Our users find books and videos for leisure time and lifelong learning. Adults build resumes and apply for jobs online using our public computers. As the economy worsens, our library gets busier.

To meet this steadily growing demand for services (books, story time for children, programs for adults, magazines and newspapers, music CDs , DVDs and VHS videos, Internet access, and free wireless service) the library board has authorized an increase in staff hours to better serve you. Currently, our greatest concern, and the reason we must ask you to please increase your support, is a leaking roof. We have $1,500 left in our budget towards the repair, which will cost approximately $_____. This urgent need is in addition to the expenses necessary to provide the much needed services for our community.

Newport Public Library's financial support from local government is limited. State dollars are decreasing. Endowment income will be restricted this year. On top of the budget deficit facing NPL is the leaking roof that can no longer wait to be repaired. More than ever, your library depends on you and your generosity.

Here's how you can help.

· Make a donation in response to this appeal. Ask your employer to match it.

· If you play golf, participate in our second annual Newport Public Library Golf Scramble at the Armitage Golf Course in Mechanicsburg on May 7. Applications and information are at NPL and at www.newportpubliclibrary.org. Tell your golfing friends!

· Dust off your bicycle and join the Ride-to-Read Bike Tour on Sept. 26 this year, which has become a tradition for over one hundred cyclists each fall.

· Please consider remembering the library in your will or estate plans, or designating contributions in memory of a loved one. These gifts keep on giving to new generations of library users.

Your generosity makes it possible for NPL to offer services not available elsewhere in our community. Your generosity keeps Newport Public Library's collection fresh and relevant. And this spring, in particular, your generosity will keep our collection dry with the critical repairs to the library's roof. To those of you who have given generously in the past, we extend our continued thanks. To our new donors, we welcome you and thank you for supporting Newport Public Library.

Sincerely,

Teena Beutel, President

P.S. No gift is too small. Every donation is greatly appreciated.
