Spring 2007
Dear Friends and Neighbors of Newport Public Library,
As the summer approaches, the Board of Trustees wants to be sure you know about all the services Newport Public Library (NPL) offers the public. Many of you 'regulars' already know that NPL is a true gem of Perry County. To those who have not visited the library lately, we invite you to come on in and explore our progress.
Library Director, Jeanne Heicher, and her exceptional staff work hard to offer programs of interest and delight to all ages. Stop by on Friday nights for Rock and Read and enjoy a cup of coffee and music. The summer reading club is a wonderful way for youth to continue enjoying books and each other during the summer months.
As well as a diverse book and periodicals collection, NPL has audio books. With a library card you can even check out an MP3 player loaded with an audio book of your choice, and you can download over 1400 titles via internet at home! The music CD collection is growing, along with our large VHS and DVD collections available for rent at only $1.00 per week. Our Used Book Sales two to three times each year are a tremendous opportunity to stock your own shelves at a fraction of the cost of new books from retail bookstores.
If your interest is mostly the internet, NPL offers free wireless service, so bring your laptop along. If you don't have a laptop, you can use one of the public computers with new upgrades on the way in the near future.
Significantly growing numbers of area residents depend on NPL's variety of services, including students who don't have far to walk at the end of their school day for regular visits to the library. NPL keeps striving to meet the demand for and to improve services, and to stay current with technology.
Keeping current with public use and demand in so many areas has a financial cost, one that stretches a budget that always has been modest if not limited. We are proud that Jeanne Heicher and her staff continuously take advantage of the grants available for improvements and upgrades. NPL hosts (and relies on) several successful annual fundraisers including the Ride to Read Bike Tour in which participation keeps growing every fall, the Buy a Book business campaign and the used book sales.
The fact is that because NPL receives scant local government support, NPL has lost a resultant match of valuable state dollars. Therefore, your public library is more dependent than ever on you-our historically generous supporters-for operating funds. Unquestionably, without your financial support, NPL would not be the community gem that it is.
One of the most pressing needs that we plan to meet this year is much needed upgrading of patron and staff computers, upgrades that will contribute to a budget shortfall of over $20,000.
I write to our regular supporters, and to those of you who may not have given in the past, to ask for your support in achieving NPL's goal of offering the best, most current services available to our patrons.
With your help Newport Public Library will remain and continue to be a vital community resource, providing services not found elsewhere in our community. Thank you so much for giving generously.
Sincerely,
Teena Beutel, President, Board of Trustees
