Welcome to Newport Public Library's Local History Web Collection, a growing and changing repository for the history of the municipalities of Perry County, provided in part by the people it serves. We hope you enjoy the material presented, and encourage you to add your story, clippings, paper memorabilia, or photos to this collection. We also hope you will help to spread the word to anyone who might have interesting information to add, or who might just enjoy perusing our offerings.
It all started on April 17, 2001, with an email message from Dr. Walter A. Reiter, M.D., great, great, great grandson of Paul Rider who first settled Newport. His generous contribution of photographs from Newport's by-gone days began the project which has blossomed into this Web Collection. From the day Dr. Reiter's photographs were placed in our display case, people have registered their comments, brought in their photos for us to scan and share with others, and recorded their memories in a scrapbook at our library. Our Local History Web Collection is an outgrowth of that generosity. We hope, with the help of Perry County people, that our Local History Web Collection will become the largest, best, and liveliest collection of Perry County history anywhere. So, if you enjoy history, have old photos, scannable paper mementos, or written recollections of the area that you are willing to share with the general public, please contact the library to arrange for that to happen.
