Girls' Basketball Team

Newport Independent Basketball Team, 1923-24

In 1923-24, Newport High School started basketball, played on the stony surface behind the school (now an apartment house between the Methodist and Reformed churches on 4th St.). To compete in game with Millersburg they boarded the Pennsylvania Railroad train at the Newport Station at 5:02 PM, left the train at the Juniata Bridge (on the Duncannon side), walked across the Juniata River, then paid 2 cents to walk across the covered bridge over the Susquehanna River. They boarded the train for Millersburg at the end of the bridge. After playing the game, they took the train from Millersburg to Harrisburg. If in time, they boarded the train for Newport at midnight. If they were too late for the midnight train, they waited for the next train, which arrived in Newport at 4 AM.
